Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected

1997- A Curtain Raiser film for Mr. Hiroshi Okuda

Sometime in 1997, there was an upcoming visit of Mr. Hiroshi Okuda, President, Toyota Motor Corporation, to the establishment of Bahwan Automotive Centre.

It was scheduled to be a mega corporate event. The entire area from the main road to the building complex was under makeover.

Under the able supervision of Prasanna, a Multi-Projector Audio Visual auditorium was taking shape.

I was given a task to create a curtain-raiser film to be screened at Al Bustan Dinner Function where Chairman Shiekh Saud Bahwan was to be honoured with ‘Best Management Award’.

It was a challenge since the source material from Toyota was available only in VHS or Super VHS format and few Beta-cams.

The editing facilities at Muscat were not so advanced in those days. Considering the need of a good editor and best editing facility, we finalised Ad-Inc. Studio.

I thoroughly went through every single tape and prepared a detailed list. Since the footage was in bits and pieces, there was very little scope for a script. However, I was able to plan the flow in my mind and with some 27 tapes reached Ad-Inc. office.

Once the Creative Director realised that the source material was in bits and pieces and that there was no proper script, he shrugged his responsibility and wrote a letter denying any responsibility for the end result. This would clearly reflect the importance of the project. However, Editor Idris Pettiwala took on the challenge after getting assurance from me about my total commitment to the project.

We spent non-stop 3 days and 2 nights at the editing table. The end result surprised everyone, including the CD.

On the D-day, the film was used as a curtain raiser to the function. After the function, Pravin said that Mr. Okuda was checking if the film was sourced from TMC Japan.

Milestone Moment:

Accepting the challenge, an ability to foresee the possibilities and making the best use of resources available.
